Recommends it for: people who don't care about shitty writing
I actually couldn't finish this book. The writing is just horrible. I really want to like it, the plot and setting are very interesting, and I loved the anime (both of them). The text reads very awkwardly, with over explained obvious details, or something explained one way only to read: 'Actually, it was like this..'. It reads like a series of breathless explanations of cheesy actions scenes written by a 12 year old that is too in love with his own hero.

Vampire Hunter D Review
I love the post-apocalyptic dystopia setting of the VHD novels .. I think that D and his very sassy hand are intriguing characters, and the plots of the novels are interesting. It's a richly imagined dark fantasy/sci-fi world.
However, I do not like the narration style at all. It has this over-the-top pulp fiction kind of feel that is incredibly cheesy, in my opinion. Your mileage may vary! :)

When this book came out I was bouncing off the walls. And I got it when it first came out and I love it! As being a fan of Vampire Hunter D I have loved all the books I have read so far.

This is the original IP for the Vampire Hunter D Anime. I feel guilty with my rating because I really wanted to like this book more. Positivly it had a solid background story and an ingaging plot, but negitivly something was compleatly turned backwards in the translation from the original Japanese. After watching the incredible film 'Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust' and finding out it was based on a series of 'Light Novels', I had to check them out somehow. Ok I devoured this book all in one day, & I really enjoyed it! But I am very torn about how to rate it. It is an unapologetic pulp scifi-horror-western, so it is light on character development & plot, & heavy on pulse-racing fight scenes, high tech gizmos, crazy mutant monsters, & gruesome scenes. This book is pretty much what you make of it. It's pulpy, vampire action with a badass, unstoppable protagonist against evil monsters. The descriptions of the setting are amazing if a bit excessive, the descriptions of characters are some of the most vivid I've ever seen. Vampire Hunter D is the first translated novel I have ever read from Japanese to English. The novel sets in a place in the near future where humans are hunted by monsters and vampires. Vampires hold high technological knowledge to be more powerful than the humans. Before I had read this book, I watched the animated movie and thought it was alright (provided it was released in the 80's). Therefore I dived into this book with an 'eh' expectation.

One of my favorite anime concepts; gothic fantasy horror meets post apocalypse distant future science fiction. Enjoyed the book but loved the two English-forged movies made from the concepts.
Honestly I didn't think I'd ever get around to reading this book. I bought my copy way back in 2009 or so and attempted it a couple of times since then, but never really got very far any of the times I tried.

I've never been so pleasantly surprised by a book, and it's been long since I've been not able to put down a book.
First of all, for those worried that the translation from Japanese to English would diminish the literary quality of the book, let me just say that the English version is outstanding, with colorful use of voice, and expert use of literary technique. It really is a pleasure to read.

This book can be described in a few words which are most likely, amazing, scary, true and fantastic well these are all the emotions I felt when I first red 6 chapters of this book. I have been getting into vampires more often now than I did when I first red this book. I love how Abraham Lincoln was a vampire. Very extraordinary!
Once, while perusing the pretty amazing library at my university, I stumbled on a book that dealt heavily on the art of translation. I grew a massive appreciation for the people who translate literature from one language to another because the work and literary prowess necessary to accomplish such a task is massive.
